The history of Georgian wine

Any man living in any corner of the world, if he knows the history of wine, he has at least a remote idea about Georgia as a mystical country "cradle of wine culture", exactly because of it is important to develop the wine tourism in the country.
The historical sources disposable for us regarding the wine history are being enriched daily by results of different archaeological excavations, we obtain many information:
Discovery of more than 8000 years aged clay jags with wine-stones of Rkatsiteli sort of grape indicates the high level of development of winemaking in Georgia of that time.
Besides, the winepress with wine-stones discovered on the territory of ancient settlement Nelkarisi belongs to era Before Christ.
Good wine as a man has its homeland. It perceives the aroma of native ground forever. The Georgian wines and alcoholic drinks are characterized by unique, original and fragrant properties.
„The Georgia is called the homeland of grapevine not causally, elsewhere the grapevine nowhere is got accustomed so sensually to fiery humidity of the ground. There are up to sixty-seven local names of wine here. The kind of grape clusters in Georgia in contrast to other countries in the first place is determined by kind of grape bush“(G. Robakidze).
There are 8 main centers of wine growing in Georgia: Kakheti 80 sorts, Kartli 72 sorts, Imereti 75 sorts, Racha-Lechkhumi 50 sorts, Abkhazia 58 sorts, Adjara 52 sorts, Guria 53 sorts, Samegrelo 60 sorts and others. (see the list of sorts in annex).
On the 23rd of July 1999 in London in center of the city on the territory of area of 100 000 foots the constantly operating wine town Vinopolis was opened. Any visitor in Vinopolis in the first place passes pavilion №1, which is called "Georgia the cradle of wine".
On 2010 Georgia is the host country of OIV world congress of wine growing-winemaking.
For confirmation of that the winemaking-wine growing has been a base of Georgian agriculture from the most ancient times it is enough the myth of argonauts, according to which. "Even the argonauts in the palace of Aieti king of Kolkheti (Samegrelo of nowadays) met fountains from which the wine was flowing". May be exactly because of that reason each conqueror, which tried to break Georgia, trampled down its religion and cut the vineyard, which is confirmed by the campaigns of Timur Lang, Shah Abbas and many others. It is necessary to note that the conquerors during centuries received the wine along with other goods for tribute.
Besides of mentioned in our country the grapevine has also an important sacral meaning: the country chosen by Godmother, to which the Christianity was preached by Disciples of Savior, Saint Andrew and Simon the Cananaean, in the first quarter of the fourth century was christianized by virgin of Cappadocia, Saint Nino who had cross of grapevine and thus grapevine - is a peculiar symbol of belief and nationality for Georgian.
Proceeding from that the history of grapevine and Christian culture has the greatest importance for development of tourism in our region we decided to chose the name for the product which is in close connection with the both concepts:
Nelkarisi is an ancient settlement in Kakheti on the territory adjoined to nowadays Nekresi monastery. The town Nelkarisi existed B.C. and as confirmed by the archaeological excavations was an important cultural center. It is known that Nelkarisi and its vicinity was transferred by Vakhtang Gorgasali to his son for managing, however, soon earthquake razed the town to the ground and for a long time even its exact location was not determined. On the territory adjoined to Nekresi from 2004-2005 during the archaeological excavations was discovered an ancient settlement on the territory of which there were an important cultural purpose buildings and subjects, including a stone winepresses, were a wine-stones appeared, which is one more proof of that Georgia is an ancient homeland of wine and that the wine cradle was established exactly in Kakheti. Proceeding from that our factory is situated enough close to the ancient settlement we decided that the name of the wine had to be the ancient town name, what in its place, is connected to the production of the wine, history of Georgian writing and, in general, is the best teller of the country's development history. We will be happy if our product will raise a question about the name even for one person and along with tasting the tradition, he will learn about Georgian history.
